3D printing technology seems to have infinite possibilities that are useful in almost every sector of the economy, allowing you to produce virtually everything from precision machine components through cars to home automation. The Russian Ministry of Defense has come up with another idea of ​​using 3D printers and presented a tank made with their help called Armata.

Electromashina, a part of the Uralvagonzavod corporation, has been working on this issue since last summer when it introduced the first models of industrial 3D printers. Since then, several prototypes and small parts have been created.

Anton Ulrich, head of Electromashina’s engineering department, points out that 3D printers make it easy to make component prototypes, which is especially important for more complex components, saving you the trouble and error of traditional production methods.

The components thus produced no longer need to be subjected to further processing, and no material losses. Components can also be manufactured with great precision to be immediately assembled in a built-in device. Thanks to 3D printers, prototyping is also becoming easier and it is possible to make molds for mass production of plastic or metal parts.

Bridgestone tires will tell you about road conditions

The car tires used to be just rubber on a steel wire frame. For a few years now, every piece of equipment has become more and more advanced and more and more sensors appear in it. In addition to pressure sensors, we will soon have additional sensors that will tell us the conditions of the road.

Tire engineers from Bridgestone have developed a new type of sensor called Contact Area Information Sensing, which is installed on the inside of the tire, to monitor its interaction with the surface, providing drivers with real-time data on road conditions.

Technology has been developing since 2011 and was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show at the time, and its first generation used a load-sensing sensor and lateral forces acting on the tire. A little later, CAIS 2 appeared, which was equipped with additional acceleration sensors that were used to determine the condition of the pavement. In 2014, Bridgestone showed CAIS 3, the latest generation of system, plus the ability to monitor the condition of the tire itself.

Now the Bridgestone management has announced the commercialization of CAIS 2, which it intends to use in passenger car and truck tires. They will be equipped with an accelerometer attached to the inner wall of the tire, which will be powered by an electromagnetic generator.

The solution will monitor high frequency vibrations on the tire and then transmit information via radio to the central module installed in the vehicle. There, using special algorithms, will be translated into information about current road conditions.

In this way, the driver will know in real time whether the road surface is moving, dry, wet, wet, covered with fresh snow, snow or ice. This is undoubtedly a very useful solution, as it is often difficult at first sight to notice that the surface can be slippery, and particularly tricky is the so-called. Black ice.

Advanced technology in the new Gear VR

There is a Samsung patent on the net, suggesting that the new generation of Gear VR goggles can be significantly upgraded. The documents indicate that on board it has the opportunity to find the technology of eye and face tracking.

Samsung Gear VR is one of the cheaper ways of experiencing virtual reality, although not available to everyone. Goggles only work with selected smartphone models of this manufacturer, which limits their usability.

However, the company managed to maintain a low product price of $ 99, although it is occupied with some imperfections in terms of its functionality. Goggles do not offer the same capabilities as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, so it is not easy to find the eye and face tracking functions.

Samsung also noticed the limitations of its product, as a patent appeared in the network, indicating that the new generation of Gear VR goggles could be greatly improved. Disclosed documents indicate that the device is likely to receive the missing technology. It will include a camera and LED lights that will be used to track the position of the head. On the other hand, the camera inside the goggles will monitor the face and eye position.
